A popular tourist destination in Ghana’s Western Region, Maaha Beach Resort, was ravaged by a severe fire outbreak on Wednesday evening, May 28, 2025, destroying several beachfront structures and accommodations around its main pool area. The fire, believed to have originated from the kitchen of neighboring Vision Beach Resort around 7 p.m., spread rapidly to Maaha Beach Resort, burning parts of its infrastructure.
Eyewitnesses described the challenges faced in containing the blaze, citing the delayed response from the nearest fire tender at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant. According to an eyewitness who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity, the fire tender claimed it couldn’t intervene due to the nature of the fire and the chemicals used in their firefighting systems.
“The fire didn’t start from our end but from Vision Beach. It started from the kitchen through its front desk before it spread to our place [Maaha],” the eyewitness recounted. The Ghana Gas fire tender reportedly passed by while the fire started but claimed it couldn’t assist due to chemical concerns. Desperate for help, the resort called upon the personal assistant of the local Member of Parliament to mobilize fire tenders from Axim and surrounding areas.
The delay in firefighting response allowed the flames to engulf more structures, with fire tenders from Axim and nearby areas eventually arriving to bring the situation under control. Videos on social media showed individuals attempting to extinguish the flames with buckets of water, an effort that proved futile.
Extent of Damage
Although the full extent of the damage is yet to be officially confirmed, the fire has destroyed properties worth thousands of cedis. Vision Beach, the neighboring resort where the fire originated, reportedly suffered significant damage, with some reports suggesting it was completely razed.
Resort’s Response
Maaha Beach Resort management has not issued an official statement on the incident. However, in a similar incident in 2023, the resort’s management assured patrons that operations were running smoothly despite a fire outbreak, attributing the cause to power outages and heavy rainfall.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the fire or confirm whether there were any injuries. An investigation is likely to be conducted to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the damage.
Tourism Impact
The Maaha Beach Resort is a popular destination, known for its luxurious rooms, suites, and stunning ocean views. The resort’s location in Ghana’s oil and gas hub, near the border with Côte d’Ivoire, makes it an attractive spot for both local and international tourists. The incident may impact tourism in the area, with visitors potentially deterred by the destruction.
Support for Affected Businesses
The incident highlights the importance of fire safety measures and emergency preparedness for businesses in the tourism industry. As the investigation unfolds, locals and tourists alike are hoping for a swift recovery for the affected resorts.
