The leader of the Catholic Church worldwide, Pope Francis, has died at 88, the Vatican has announced.
Pope Francis was the Catholic Church’s first Latin American pontiff.
His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo.
Pope Francis, an Argentinean-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio took over the papacy in March 2013.
He took over as the Catholic Church’s influence waned during the troubled papacy of Pope Benedict XVI, whose surprise resignation led to Francis’ election.
Announcing Francis death, Cardinal Ferrell says: “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.
