U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).could face a “very bad” future if European allies do not help address the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route that has effectively been shut by Iran amid the ongoing conflict.
Speaking in a brief interview with Financial Times on Sunday, Trump said the United States expects support from its European partners, drawing a parallel with Washington’s assistance to Ukraine during its war with Russia.
The president argued that just as the U.S. has helped Ukraine in its fight against Russia, European allies should be prepared to step in and help secure the Strait of Hormuz — a vital passageway for global oil shipments. The disruption has already pushed energy prices sharply higher worldwide.
“If there’s no response or if it’s a negative response I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO,” said Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the alliance in the past, accusing member states of relying too heavily on U.S. support.
