Human rights activists from Kenya have been cautioned by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to desist from meddling in Tanzania’s political affairs.

According to her, she will not allow Kenyan activists to “meddle” in Tanzania’s affairs and cause “chaos”.

President Samia issued the warning after Kenya’s former Justice Minister, Martha Karua, and other prominent Kenyan lawyers and rights campaigners were deported from Tanzania, preventing them from attending the court case of Tanzania’s opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, charged with treason.

According to Samia, “If they have been contained in their country, let them not come here to meddle. Let’s not give them a chance. They have already created chaos in their own country.”

Tanzania is heading into a general elections elections in October this year and there are concerns that the government is cracking down on opposition parties.

On Monday, the leader of the main opposition Chadema party, Tundu Lissu, appeared in a magistrate’s court after being arrested in April this year.

He raised his fist in a gesture of defiance and told his supporters: “You will be fine. You should not fear.”
