Stormzy to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Cambridge for Philanthropy and Cultural Impact

British-Ghanaian rapper and philanthropist Stormzy is set to receive an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Cambridge in recognition of his contributions to education, music, sports, and literature.

Born Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., Stormzy has been a powerful advocate for Black students in higher education. In 2018, he launched the Stormzy Scholarship, providing full financial support to two Black British students at Cambridge each year, covering tuition and living expenses. The initiative later expanded, with additional backing from HSBC UK, increasing the number of beneficiaries to ten students annually.

To date, 55 students have benefitted from the scholarship, and this year’s largest cohort is set to graduate. Cambridge University acknowledged the “Stormzy effect”, citing a notable increase in Black student applications across the UK due to his influence.

A Prestigious Honor Among Elite Recipients

Stormzy is among eight distinguished individuals nominated for honorary degrees by Cambridge. Other honorees include:

  • Dame Katherine Grainger – One of Britain’s most decorated Olympians and the first female chair of the British Olympic Association.
  • Sir Oliver Hart – Nobel Prize-winning economist.
  • Professor Angela Davis – Political activist, author, and scholar.
  • Sir Simon Russell Beale – Renowned actor.

All nominees have accepted their honorary degrees, pending final approval by the university’s governing body. The official ceremony, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice, is scheduled for June 25.

Beyond Music: Stormzy’s Lasting Legacy

Stormzy’s recognition reinforces his commitment to social change and educational empowerment. His philanthropic efforts continue to inspire and provide opportunities for young Black students, proving that his impact goes far beyond music.
