The Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations unit, alongside the Crime Detection Tracing Unit, has launched a massive manhunt following a deadly mass shooting that left nine people dead and 10 others injured in Bekkersdal during the early hours of Sunday, December 21, 2025.
The horrific incident occurred just before 1:00 AM at a licensed tavern located in the Tambo section.
Details of the Attack
According to police reports, approximately 12 unknown suspects arrived at the venue in two vehicles—a white kombi and a silver sedan. The group immediately opened fire on patrons within the establishment.
The suspects did not stop there; as they fled the scene, they reportedly continued to shoot randomly, causing further panic and casualties in the surrounding area.
Police Response and Investigation
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the tragic toll of the attack.
“The shooting resulted in nine people being killed and 10 being injured. About 12 unknown suspects in a white kombi and a silver sedan opened fire at tavern patrons and continued to shoot randomly as they fled the scene,” Sibeko stated.
The 10 injured victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. The motives behind the massacre remain unknown, and the circumstances are still under active investigation.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has mobilized all necessary high-level resources to track down the perpetrators, including:
