Nearly four decades after her acting debut in “The Color Purple,” Oprah Winfrey brings a reimagined adaptation of Alice Walker’s iconic novel to the screen. This time, it’s a musical film streaming on Showmax, boasting a star-studded cast and a message of resilience and sisterhood.
The film, directed by Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule, features “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino as Celie, Halle Bailey as Nettie, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, and Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery. Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, and the late Quincy Jones reprise their roles as producers.
Winfrey, who played Sofia in the 1985 adaptation, expressed her initial hesitation to revisit the story, stating that the original film “withstands the test of time.” However, she was persuaded by Spielberg, who recognized the importance of the story in the context of the #MeToo era.
The late Quincy Jones emphasized the significance of the story, describing it as an “American story about the African American experience.” He believed it was crucial to pass down this truth to future generations.
Winfrey hopes that the film will continue to inspire audiences, both old and new, with its message of resilience and the power of human connection.
