NIGERIA: Young Woman Kills Herself in Gubio Amid Outrage Over Alleged Forced Marriage

A young woman in the Gubio local government area of Borno State has reportedly taken her own life, sparking outrage across the community over serious allegations that she was forced into marriage by her father.

Details circulating on social media suggest that the woman was coerced into marrying one of her father’s friends, a development that allegedly led to her despair and tragic decision. The incident has brought renewed and urgent attention to the challenges of forced marriages and the rights of young women in the region.

Police Launch Investigation

While the full circumstances surrounding the case are still being verified, the Borno State Police Command has launched a discreet investigation into the matter.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, is determined to uncover the truth and called on anyone with credible information to assist.

“The Command is committed to establishing the true facts of this matter,” Daso said. He also warned the public against sharing unverified information that could cause panic or misrepresent the situation.

Call for Justice

Child protection advocate Bukar Fantami Gubio has urged human rights organizations and authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice for the victim.

He stressed the urgent need to protect young women from coercion, emphasizing that forced marriages are a serious violation of human rights and must be addressed.

The alleged suicide has ignited widespread concern in Borno State, highlighting the pressing need for measures to safeguard the rights, freedom, and dignity of vulnerable young women.
