The National Film Authority (NFA) has held the National Film Dialogue in Accra.
The event brought together key players in the film industry to explore ways to accelerate the growth of Ghana’s movie sector.
Under the theme “Accelerating Industry Development,” the event featured prominent actors including Majid Michel, Fred Amugi, Roselyn Ngissah, Nicki Samonas, Bill Asamoah, and Martha Ankomah.
They were joined by filmmakers, producers, and industry experts for in-depth discussions on filmmaking, financing, marketing, content creation, and the use of technology to remain competitive in the global market.
The dialogue served as a platform for industry leaders to share solutions for advancing Ghana’s film sector.
Participants stressed the importance of collaboration, high-quality content, and innovative financing models. The need for better training and partnerships was also highlighted as key to improving production standards and global competitiveness.
Speaking to the media, NFA CEO Kafui Danku Pitcher emphasieded the need for inclusive decision-making in policy development.
For us to succeed, we need to bring everybody to the table,” she said on Tuesday September 16, stressing that policies should support all filmmakers, not just a few.
She also addressed ongoing challenges such as poor sound and visual quality in local productions.
“Sometimes the sound is so piercing that you don’t even want to watch,” she noted.
To tackle this, the NFA plans to introduce training programs focused on storytelling, sound design, and visual production, in partnership with global experts.
The issue of film financing was another major topic. The CEO announced that the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (GAFTA) had donated GHS100,000 toward a long-proposed film fund. She described the donation as a “wake-up call” for others to support the initiative.
“The funding is not only about government. We need everybody,” she said, urging the private sector and development partners to step up.
Participants also discussed how modern technology can improve both production and marketing, ensuring Ghanaian films are competitive internationally. Calls were made for stronger regulation to maintain quality standards, and concerns were raised over inconsistent storytelling and outdated production methods.
Although Ghana’s film industry has seen growth, it continues to face major challenges including limited funding, inadequate training, and stiff competition from global content.
The National Film Dialogue aims to address these issues by encouraging collaboration, innovation, and policy support. With a renewed focus on training and funding, the NFA is positioning the industry for long-term success both locally and internationally.
