A prominent Mexican television broadcaster, Debora Estrella, has died in a plane crash in the north-eastern state of Nuevo Leon. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening, claiming the lives of the 43-year-old newsreader and the pilot, Bryan Ballesteros.
The two-seater Cessna, in which Estrella was taking a flying class, crashed to the ground near an industrial estate in the city of Garcia. Unverified social media footage from the scene shows a small plane spiraling out of control before it comes down.
A Final Post
Just moments before the accident, Estrella shared a photo of the aircraft on her Instagram Live story with the caption, “Guess what.” She was reportedly preparing to take off from Monterrey-Del Norte International Airport.
Following the crash, Garcia’s mayor, Manuel Guerra Cavazos, confirmed the fatalities from the scene. “I regret to inform you that I am at the scene. It has been confirmed that a light aircraft has crashed and two people have died, apparently a man and a woman,” he posted on social media.
Tributes Pour In
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends. Jose Luis Garcia, Estrella’s ex-husband, a journalist himself, initially posted about the crash without knowing she was a victim. Her colleague, Maria Julia Lafuente, who co-hosted a morning news program with Estrella, shared a heartfelt tribute on their TV station.
“How can I say, good morning, happy Sunday, when our hearts and souls are broken,” Lafuente said on air. “There is no single reason why Debora Estrella is no longer here with us. Only God knows the reason for things.”
Lafuente and other colleagues also revealed that just one day before the crash, Estrella had told friends at a birthday party that she was beginning flying classes to obtain her pilot’s license.
Pilot Bryan Ballesteros, who also died in the crash, was a former commercial airline pilot. A former student of his, Miguel Briones, paid tribute on Facebook, writing, “Rest in peace pilot Bryan Ballesteros. I thank you for your teachings and your willingness to help me learn how to fly.”
