Two suspected armed robbers have been killed following a gun battle with police near Manso Antoakrom in the Ashanti Region, after security operatives acted on intelligence about an imminent robbery attempt.
The incident occurred on December 31, 2025, when officers from the Ashanti South Regional Police Command received information that an armed gang had positioned itself along the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta road and was preparing to attack motorists and commuters using the route.
According to the police, a team of officers was swiftly dispatched to the area. Upon sighting the security personnel, the suspects allegedly opened fire in a bid to escape, prompting the police to return fire.
Two members of the gang were shot during the exchange, while two other suspects, believed to have sustained gunshot wounds, managed to flee into nearby bushes.
The injured suspects were transported to the Bekwai Government Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Weapons and Vehicle Recovered
A search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of several items, including:
• One AK-47 rifle loaded with four rounds of ammunition
• One pump-action shotgun loaded with four BB cartridges
• Four spent BB cartridges
• A black bag containing 16 live cartridges
• A black Toyota Voxy vehicle, registration number AS 6412–25
Police believe the weapons and vehicle were intended to be used in the planned robbery operation.
Identities and Alleged Crimes
The deceased suspects were later identified as Mohammed Umaru, aged 28, and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw, aged 26.
Briefing journalists, the Deputy Commander of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, ACP Cephas Arthur, said preliminary investigations and confessions linked the suspects to several major robbery incidents across the country.
These include the Mpohor gold robbery, involving gold valued at approximately $3.2 million, the Nyinahini highway robbery, during which a Toyota Voxy driver was killed, and a cocoa shed robbery at Sefwi.
ACP Arthur said police are intensifying investigations and intelligence operations to track down the remaining suspects who escaped, as well as any other accomplices connected to the criminal network.
He assured the public of the police service’s commitment to protecting lives and property, and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security efforts across the region.
