The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested the father of a three-year-old girl who was abused by her stepmother in Winneba in the Central Region.
The stepmother allegedly poured boiling water on the child’s private part as punishment for bedwetting, leaving her in a critical condition.
The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, where medical officers say she will require complex procedures to restore her reproductive organ due to the severity of the injuries.
The girl had travelled to Winneba to spend the holidays with her father when the incident occurred. Her stepmother, a Liberian national identified only as Akaima, reportedly carried out the act.
The development has sparked widespread concern, particularly from the Mother and Child Rescue Unit of Challenging Heights, a local non-governmental organisation focused on protecting vulnerable children. The group has pledged to cover the victim’s medical bills and is demanding thorough investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, DOVVSU at the Winneba Divisional Police Command says investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to arrest the primary suspect. The unit noted that domestic crime trends in the municipality remain high, adding that it is intensifying public education to help curb the menace.
