The campaign team of Kennedy Agyapong has cautioned the leadership of Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against promoting former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s preferred choice for its January 31, 2026 presidential primaries, saying the party has already under Dr. Bawumia recorded the worst results ever in its history and any attempt to unfairly promote him over other candidates in the race will further divide the party and cause its more decline in general elections.
According to Ken Agyapong’s campaign team, NPP leadership is unfairly promoting Dr. Bawumia as the preferred “establishment choice” in the 2026 presidential primaries.
A statement signed and issued on Thursday, August 28, 2025, by Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson of the Ken Agyapong campaign team, criticized the alleged use of NPP’s official social media handles to exclusively stream Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing event.
The statement described the use of the party’s social media platforms for streaming Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing event as a betrayal of the unity the NPP claims to stand for.
It says “The use of the official party’s social media handles to stream only DMB’s nomination filing is a betrayal of the very unity our national leadership claims to preach”, adding that this is not an isolated incident but one which is part of a pattern of bias that has characterized internal party affairs, aimed at giving Dr. Bawumia an unfair advantage.
According to the statement, such actions could undermine unity within the party and adversely affect its chances in general elections.
The statement pointed out that “Under his watch, we recorded the worst results in our party’s history: a 31% drop in national votes, a 16% decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and virtually no support from the Zongo communities.”
