The Suame District Court in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, has remanded seven Ghanaian military officers into the custody of the Military Police in connection with the alleged assault of civilians, leading to the death of two victims. The officers face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
According to the prosecution, the officers assaulted three men arrested on March 28 over accusations of stealing an iPhone. The victims, Kwame Adu (aka Ogee), Kwabena Sarfo, and Christian Obiri Yeboah (also known as Kofi Yesu), were taken to the 4th Infantry Battalion barracks, where they were allegedly beaten severely.

– Victims’ Accounts: Christian Obiri Yeboah, the sole surviving victim, recounted being assaulted at the military barracks. He and the other two victims were allegedly beaten before being dumped at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi.
– Officers’ Statements: In their cautioned statements, the officers admitted apprehending the victims for interrogation but denied beating them. According to Detective Inspector Justice Ativor, the police collaborated with the Military Command to arrest the suspects.
– Military Response: The Military High Command confirmed the civilians sustained injuries and assured a thorough investigation. Brig Gen E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, promised that any personnel found guilty will face the law.
The court ordered the accused to be held in Military Police custody until April 22, 2025. Family members of the deceased demand justice, urging authorities to ensure a fair investigation.
