33 Nigerians, 6 Others Arrested In Ghana For Prostitution, Drug-related Crimes

Police in the Central Region of Ghana have arrested some 33 Nigerians and six other individuals for allegedly engaging in prostitution and drug-related crimes.

The 33 Nigerians, police said, are all women.

According to police, the Nigerians are suspected of being exploited in sex work.

Police disclosed that the remaining six persons are all men, saying they were nabbed for their alleged involvement in drug-related crimes.

According to police, the Nigerians and the six men were arrested at Nipanekro near Subin in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region.

Speaking to the media, the Central North Regional Police Commander, ACP Abraham Acquaye, revealed that the Nigerian women will be treated as victims of human trafficking rather than criminals.

He disclosed that they would be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for repatriation to their home country.

According to him, the Nigerians told police they were brought into Ghana under the control of a woman identified only as “Mama Rich”.

He said the Nigerians told police that “Mama Rich” subjected them to harsh punishments if they failed to meet daily financial targets from prostitution.
