At least three people have been reported dead at Adenta, a suburb of Accra, after torrential rains caused widespread flooding across the Ghanaian capital.
The downpour started around 4:15 pm on Sunday, May 18, 2025. It rained for nearly three hours.
Ella Esiman Nongo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Adenta Municipal Assembly, confirmed the deaths.
She said the deaths were recorded in different parts of the Municipality, including Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon.
According to her, “In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon.
Building in waterways
Nongo said emergency teams managed to rescue most stranded residents in Ashiyie area. She warned that many communities, especially low-lying ones, remain at high risk due to poor drainage and indiscriminate development.
Speaking to Accra-based radio station, Citi FM, Madam Nongo says “Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we are facing.”
She therefore called for stricter enforcement of building regulations and urgent structural interventions to address the root causes of Accra’s perennial flooding, particularly in vulnerable municipalities like Adenta.
She cautioned “If we don’t tackle the indiscipline in our building practices and enfore the rules, these tragedies will keep recurring.”
Other Affected Areas
Areas which were also hit by floods included Tema, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa.
The floods left vehicles stranded and several properties damaged. Several roads were rendered impassable.
Residents at Adjei-Kojo Kanewu area in Tema West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region reported that their homes have been flooded.
