Zoomlion Ghana Limited has issued a public statement distancing itself from illegal mining activities, known locally as “galamsey,” after discovering that excavators and other mining equipment bearing the company’s name are being used in such operations.
The company clarified that it has no involvement in mining activities, whether legal or illegal, and does not own, operate, or lease equipment for mining purposes. Zoomlion Ghana emphasized that the equipment in question is manufactured by Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company with a similar brand name but entirely independent and unaffiliated with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
“We wish to unequivocally state that Zoomlion Ghana Limited is not engaged in, does not support, and has never participated in any illegal mining activity, including galamsey,” the statement read. “Any use of such equipment in connection with illegal mining is without our knowledge, consent, or approval.”
The company urged the public, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities to disregard any misrepresentation or unauthorized use of its name. Zoomlion Ghana Limited reiterated its commitment to maintaining its reputation and distancing itself from any activities that may tarnish its brand.
This statement comes amid growing concerns about the prevalence of illegal mining in Ghana and its environmental and social impacts. The public is advised to report any instances of equipment misuse or illegal mining activities to the relevant authorities.
