On July 16, 2025, the Walter and Albertina Sisulu Foundation demanded the resignation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, accusing him of failing to address the escalating corruption crisis within the government and law enforcement. The call follows Ramaphosa’s decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave amid allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused Mchunu and senior police officials of interfering in criminal investigations.
In a statement, the Foundation’s chairperson, Dr. Allan Boesak, criticized Ramaphosa’s leadership as inadequate, stating, “We cannot pretend any longer that President Ramaphosa is serious about fighting corruption. Since he took office, we would have hoped for bold and clear leadership. But time and again, he has failed to act when it mattered.” Boesak described the President’s response—establishing a judicial commission to probe the police interference claims and placing Mchunu on leave—as “attempts to delay and deflect” rather than resolve the crisis.
The Foundation, dedicated to the legacy of anti-apartheid icons Walter and Albertina Sisulu, emphasized that South Africans deserve more than inquiries and promises, pointing to the impact of corruption on service delivery, crime, and inequality. Boesak argued that Ramaphosa’s inaction signals a lack of accountability, undermining public trust in institutions.
This rare intervention by a prominent civil society organization reflects growing public frustration with political accountability. While the Presidency has not responded, sources indicate the inquiry into the police allegations will commence soon, with terms of reference being finalized. Political analysts note that the situation intensifies pressure on Ramaphosa, who has positioned himself as a reformer, as public confidence in governance and law enforcement continues to wane.
The Foundation remains steadfast, asserting that new leadership is essential to restore trust and rebuild institutions tarnished by years of corruption and political interference.
