Vivo Energy Ghana’s Green4Clean Schools Project Tours McKingtorch Africa Recycling Facility

As part of its Green4Clean Schools Renewable Energy Project, Vivo Energy Ghana, the Shell licensee, partnered with McKingtorch Africa, a social enterprise focused on environmental sustainability and innovative plastic waste solutions, and United Way Ghana, a non-governmental organization, to facilitate an educational tour for pupils of La Enobal Basic School at the McKingtorch Africa Recycling Facility on July 7, 2025.

The initiative aimed to ignite early interest in environmental sustainability by demonstrating how innovative plastic waste recycling can create valuable products while preserving the environment. Accompanied by their teachers and Vivo Energy Ghana representatives, the pupils toured the facility, observing the transformation of plastic waste into durable products such as school desks, chairs, clocks, sandals, and other essentials. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of plastic waste management and the importance of environmental stewardship.

To support McKingtorch Africa’s impactful work, Vivo Energy Ghana purchased school desks made from recycled plastic, which will be donated to public schools in underserved communities, aligning with the company’s broader education and sustainability agenda.

During the visit, Mr. Christian Li, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and youth empowerment, stating, “Our visit to McKingtorch Africa reaffirms our belief that the future of sustainability lies in innovation and education. By exposing these young minds to the power of recycling and clean energy, we are empowering the next generation of change-makers and contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 4 – Quality Education and Goal 13 – Climate Action. The tour has been insightful, and we need partners like you to help save our planet.”

Makafui Awuku, CEO and Founder of McKingtorch Africa, expressed gratitude, saying, “We are truly grateful to Vivo Energy Ghana for patronizing our products and believing in our vision of transforming waste into impact. This partnership helps us scale our work and inspires the next generation to see waste as a resource and innovative tool for change. We are excited about the prospects and look forward to deepening our collaboration.”

The tour also highlighted potential partnership opportunities between Vivo Energy Ghana and McKingtorch Africa to scale up recycling and circular economy initiatives at Shell service stations and schools within its communities. Both organizations expressed interest in collaborative projects to enhance environmental education and promote sustainable infrastructure in basic schools and communities.

The Green4Clean Schools Project integrates renewable energy education, environmental conservation, and innovation for school children in Vivo Energy Ghana’s operational communities. Through this initiative, the company continues to promote sustainable practices and inspire young people to build a greener future.

Vivo Energy Ghana remains committed to creating a lasting positive impact on the environment and the communities it serves.
