A 23-year-old man, identified as John Temitope Onetufo, was fatally stabbed in the Lewisham area of London on New Year’s Eve. The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that two suspects are currently in custody as the investigation into the tragic incident continues.
The stabbing occurred on Wednesday afternoon, December 31, 2025, just as the city was preparing for year-end festivities.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were alerted to reports of a stabbing in Grove Street, Lewisham, at approximately 12:35 PM. Officers from the Metropolitan Police attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.
Upon arrival, responders found Onetufo, a resident of Deptford, suffering from a critical stab wound to the chest. Despite the immediate and intensive efforts of paramedics and specialized medical teams, he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
Following a rapid initial investigation, police confirmed that two individuals were apprehended on January 2, 2026, in connection with the killing:
- A 17-year-old boy.
- A 23-year-old man.
Both suspects remain in custody as detectives work to establish the full timeline of events leading up to the confrontation.
Statement from the Met Police
Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who is leading the investigation, described the arrests as a “significant development” while stressing that the case is still active.
“My team has worked relentlessly over recent days to pursue every line of enquiry, and I can confirm that two arrests have now been made in connection with this tragic incident,” DCI Townsend stated. “Establishing the full circumstances surrounding what happened remains our priority.”
The DCI extended her deepest sympathies to Onetufo’s family and friends, promising a commitment to finding answers and ensuring that those responsible face justice.
Public Appeal for Information
The Metropolitan Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information, including dashcam or doorbell footage from the Grove Street area, to come forward.
