A sea of black, green, and gold filled the Durban International Convention Centre as thousands of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League members gathered to bid farewell to their beloved Deputy President, Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe.

The 64-year-old leader died last weekend after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of quiet humility, unwavering bravery, and lifelong selflessness.

The emotional service was filled with tributes from speaker after speaker, highlighting Mnganga-Gcabashe’s tireless efforts to fight for equality and uplift women across South Africa.

As the voices of the Women’s Anthem rose, the lyrics resonated deeply, bringing tears to the eyes of the Women’s League president, Sisisi Tolashe, and Mnganga-Gcabashe’s family members.

The outpouring of grief and admiration was a testament to the profound impact Mnganga-Gcabashe had on the lives of those she touched. Her dedication to the ANC Women’s League and the struggle for women’s rights will be remembered for generations to come.

Mnganga-Gcabashe’s daughter, Sphelele, cried bitterly during the funeral and couldn’t read her tribute to her mother, leaving someone to read her tribute on her behalf.

Sphelele says in her tribute that she remembers a mother who was not only an activist and politician, but her best friend.

She said: “Your elegance, wisdom, fire, and love all wrapped up in love, stylish, funny, sharp, deeply loving, and proud of everything you stood for. Your legacy will forever be my motivation and I will strive to make you proud every day. I love you dearly and I miss you more than words can express.”

South African President and ANC leader, Cyril Ramaphosa says the passing of Mnganga-Gcabashe comes at a time in the country when her skills of quiet bravery, selflessness and that of a unifier are most needed.

Ramaphosa made reference to the recent resurgence of racial tensions in South Africa, as well as the scourge of gender-based violence.
