Taliban Conduct Public Execution of Man Convicted of Double Murder in Afghanistan

The Taliban government has carried out a public execution in western Afghanistan, where a man convicted of killing two people was executed before a large crowd.

According to a statement released by the Supreme Court on Thursday, October 16, 2025, the execution took place at a sports stadium in Qala-i-Naw, the capital of Badghis Province.

The court said the man had been sentenced to “retaliatory punishment” for fatally shooting a man and a woman. Officials stated that his case had been “examined very precisely and repeatedly” before the sentence was approved by the country’s supreme leadership.

Witnesses told AFP that the convicted man was shot three times by a relative of the victims in front of thousands of onlookers.

The families of the victims were reportedly offered amnesty and reconciliation but declined, opting instead for the enforcement of the death penalty, the court added.

This execution marks the 11th public execution since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021, according to an AFP tally.

Authorities had announced the planned execution a day earlier through official notices distributed across the city, inviting residents to attend the event.
