South Africa Expresses Optimism Over Renewal of U.S. AGOA Trade Deal

South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, says trade discussions with the United States are progressing positively, expressing optimism that the U.S. Congress will renew a key free trade agreement with Africa before the end of the year.

Speaking at the FT Africa Summit in London on Tuesday, Lamola said there were “positive vibes” from U.S. lawmakers regarding the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which expired last month.

“Negotiations are going very well,” Lamola added, noting that ongoing bilateral trade talks between South Africa and the United States have been productive.
