Rema Becomes 2nd African Musician To Win MTV Video Music Award

Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Rema, has become the second African Artiste in history to win an MTV Video Music Award (VMA).

Previously in 2021, Nigerian singer, Wizkid also won an MTV VMA.

 

Rema’s chart-topping song, ‘Calm Down’ featuring Selena Gomez, was announced as the Best Afrobeats Song at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The 2023 edition of the VMAs was held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA.

He becomes the first Afrobeats singer to win a VMA plaque. Afrobeats song category was introduced just this year.

During his acceptance speech, Rema expressed gratitude to the pioneers of Afrobeats, saying “I am so happy but one thing I will not forget to do tonight is forget to shoutout the people who open the doors for me”.

The Mavin Records signee added: “big shouts to Fela, who started Afrobeats in the first place, 2 Baba, Don Jazzy, D Banj, De Prince, Runtown, Timaya, 2Face, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido”.
