President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has taken over from Angolan President, Joao Lourenco, as Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Mr. Mnangagwa took over the mantle of leadership for the sub-regional bloc during the 44th Ordinary Summit of SADC heads of state and government held in the Zimbabwean capital, Harare on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
The Summit, held under the theme: “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustainable Economic Growth and Development Towards an Industrialized SADC.
Delivering his farewell speech, Mr. Lourenco highlighted his achievements as SADC Chairperson and ongoing efforts of the bloc.
Mr. Lourenco praised the collective efforts of SADC member states in addressing critical issues such as disease reduction, disaster management, and security in Southern Africa.
According to the Angolan President, “Over the past year, we have made significant strides in combating diseases like HIV/AIDS and cholera, and we have operationalized the SADC Humanitarian Operations Centre, which has been instrumental in responding to natural disasters.”
President Lourenco showed confidence in the ability of Zimbabwe to lead SADC through its next phase of development.
The Angolan leader appealed for a continued focus on innovation, sustainable economic growth, and industrialization in Southern Africa.
According to him, “Our work is far from over. We must continue to promote innovation and unlock opportunities for sustainable development across our region. I have full faith that under President Mnangagwe’s leadership, SADC will continue to thrive and advance the well-being of our people.”
In his acceptance speech, President Mnangagwa shared his vision for SADC, focusing on economic transformation and regional integration.
President Mnangagwa promised to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor, promising to work closely with all member states to achieve the SADC’s goals.
According to him, “Zimbabwe is honoured to take on this responsibility, and we are committed to driving SADC’s agenda forward. We will focus on deepening regional integration, enhancing our industrial capacity, and fostering an environment where innovation can flourish.”
