Kano, Nigeria — The Kano State Police Command has opened an investigation into the killing of a pregnant woman and her 18-month-old son in Sheka Sabuwar Gandu, a neighbourhood within the Kano metropolis.
The incident was reportedly discovered at about 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025, when the husband of the deceased woman returned home from work and found their residence locked from the outside. Concerned, he was said to have forced the door open, where he made the grim discovery.
Sources in the community said the bodies of the woman and her young child were found inside the house after an apparent attack. The assailants are yet to be identified, and the motive behind the killings remains unclear.
Community raises security concerns
A local community leader, Ahmad Sani, who confirmed the incident, expressed concern over what he described as inadequate security in the area. He noted that residents had previously built a police outpost through communal efforts, but it has not been staffed by security personnel.
“For a long time, the community constructed a police outpost, but authorities are yet to deploy officers to man the facility,” Sani said.
He appealed to the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori, to urgently deploy officers to the outpost to improve surveillance and prevent further incidents.
The spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the killings on Sunday, stating that detectives have commenced investigations.
“Yes, the incident occurred, and investigation is ongoing,” the police spokesperson said.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and to provide any useful information that could assist in identifying those responsible, as the police work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
