Planned WAPCo Maintenance: Energy Ministry, GRIDCo Pledge Stable Power Supply

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has reassured consumers that electricity supply will remain largely stable despite scheduled maintenance works by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo).

In an official statement released on Saturday, January 17, 2026, GRIDCo confirmed that WAPCo will carry out mandatory maintenance on its gas infrastructure in Ghana on Sunday, January 18, 2026, between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Temporary gas supply interruption

According to the statement, the maintenance exercise will result in a temporary shutdown of gas supply to thermal power plants in Tema, which rely on natural gas delivered through the West African Gas Pipeline.

GRIDCo explained that the planned works are essential to guarantee the long-term safety, reliability and operational integrity of the gas pipeline system, which plays a critical role in Ghana’s power generation mix.

Measures to limit impact on power supply

To prevent widespread power disruptions, GRIDCo said alternative fuel arrangements have already been made to support affected thermal plants during the maintenance window. These measures are expected to ensure continuous power generation and keep the national grid stable throughout the period.

The company further noted that key stakeholders across the energy value chain, including power producers and system operators, will be on standby to closely monitor the process and respond swiftly to any unexpected challenges.

Appeal for public cooperation

While acknowledging that some consumers may experience minor inconveniences, GRIDCo emphasized that every effort has been made to minimise the impact on households and businesses. The company appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as the maintenance is carried out.

The statement, issued by GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Section, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a reliable and secure electricity supply, while also ensuring that critical energy infrastructure is properly maintained to prevent unplanned outages in the future.
