Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has expressed serious concern about a significant public health challenge facing the region due to a major surge in typhoid cases.
In an interview on Tuesday, August 26, Mr. Gyapong revealed that the number of confirmed typhoid cases has more than doubled within 2025, reaching 22,261. This is a troubling increase from the 10,233 cases—about 5% of the region’s population—that were recorded in the first quarter of the year. The Minister noted that the increase is primarily due to poor sanitation.
In response to the initial report, the Environmental and Sanitation Secretariat began a six-month public education campaign on the causes and prevention of the disease. However, the Minister stated that despite these efforts, the number of cases has continued to rise. A new task force has since been created to conduct a door-to-door campaign to educate the public and help control the spread.
