One protester has been presumed dead as a Kenyan police officer also allegedly shot an unarmed civilian in the head, during protests over the alleged murder of blogger, Albert Omondi Ojwang. At least 11 protesters were injured during the protests.
The protester named Eli Joshua, who was shot in the head, according to Kenya National Police Service, is on admission at the Kenyatta National Hospital and responding well to treatment.
Mr. Ojwang died in police custody recently and Kenyans have taken to the streets to demand justice for his alleged killing in a Nairobi police custody.
Eyewitnesses say the police officer concealed his face before shooting the unarmed man in the head with a shotgun on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
The deceased was believed to be a trader caught up in a confrontation with two officers while standing on a Nairobi sidewalk.
He died while being treated at Kenya’s largest referral government hospital. The hospital said his injuries included gunshot wounds.
The Kenya National Police in a statement confirmed the Tuesday shooting by the police officer.
According to the statement signed by Muchin Nyaga, the national police spokesperson, “The National Police Service noted with great concern, an incident involving shooting of an unarmed civilian by a police officer using an anti-riot shotgun, within the Nairobi Central Business District on 17th June 2025.
It said “following this incident, the Inspector-General National Police Service ordered for the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested.”
The statement added that “Furthermore, NPS has noted a group of goons armed with crude weapons, in today’s protests within the CBD. The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law. Consequently, investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly.”
“The victim was taken to hospital and he is receiving treatment accordingly”.
