Nana Abraham, a player for Barau FC, has released a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding his injury during the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash against Katsina United last Saturday, insisting he was hit by thrown objects and did not suffer a throat injury as widely reported.
The incident occurred minutes after Barau’s Orji Kalu scored a 69th-minute equaliser, which sparked anger among some home supporters.
Abraham’s Account
In a video statement, Abraham provided a clear and direct account of what transpired:
“It was during the course of the match, when we equalized our goal, the fans of Katsina United started throwing objects towards our bench. One of them hit my chest and lower shin, and that’s when I saw blood. That’s what happened, not a slitted throat.”
This clarification directly contradicts earlier narratives that suggested a more severe, direct attack on the player’s neck.
Katsina United Denies Direct Assault
Following the initial reports, Katsina United officials also denied that any supporter had invaded the pitch or directly assaulted Abraham, calling the earlier reports of a severe attack “misleading.”
While the player’s update provides relief regarding the nature of the injury, the incident still highlights ongoing concerns over fan violence in Nigerian football, particularly the dangerous act of throwing objects onto the pitch.
