A 37-year-old Nigerian man who claimed he came to Ghana purposely to defraud people overseas, especially white people, have been freed from the Nsawam Medium Prisons together with 11 other prisoners under Ghana’s Justice for All Program.

Speaking to the press during his release from prison on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the Nigerian man who claimed he hails from Ondo State, said he came to Ghana to commit fraud and after defrauding people overseas to the tone of about 5 million Naira, he had an argument with his “chairman” over sharing the money as his Chairman wanted 70% of the fraud cash even though they had earlier agreed that his Chairman will take 60% and he will take 40%. He said his Chairman forcibly took 70% of the 5 million Naira, and unhappy with the decision, he had to leave his chairman’s house to lodge at a hotel in Kasoa in the Central Region of Ghana. One night while lodging in the hotel in 2019, he went in for a prostitute and took her to his hotel but she died during the night. He informed the hotel management about the death of the prostitute and police were informed, leading to his arrest. He was only taken to court once and remanded since 2019, he said.

He and the 11 other prisoners were released after hearings for 24 inmates at the Nsawam Medium Prison.

At least 10 other inmates were granted bail, while two others were denied bail.

Most of the prisoners released or granted bail were detained for various alleged offences, including murder and unnatural carnal sex.

They had been in the Nsawam prison for several years without trial.
