Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) have arrested eight persons suspected to be members of a notorious human trafficking syndicate operating between Nigeria and Ghana.
The operatives also rescued 29 suspects, most of whom are foreign nationals from other West African countries.
According to a press statement from NAPTIP’s Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye, the agency received intelligence from the Ghanaian Embassy about a Ghanaian national who was allegedly recruited under false pretenses and transported to Nigeria, where he was subjected to exploitation.
The victim was reportedly defrauded of $3,500 and, upon arrival in Nigeria, the traffickers confiscated his international passport and personal belongings.
The raid, triggered by this report, led to the apprehension of the eight suspects, who are believed to be part of an organized trafficking network. They are currently in custody for profiling and interrogation.
