The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has prohibited the unauthorized use of its campus facilities, including hostels and residential areas, for video production by skitmakers, filmmakers, and content creators.
In a statement signed by Head of Communication Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem on Thursday, the university expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals filming content on campus without official approval. The directive is aimed at protecting the academic environment and preserving the institution’s image from potential misrepresentation in unregulated productions.
Requirement for Official Approval
UNILAG confirmed that it has established procedures for any recording or content production on campus to ensure safety, decorum, and the integrity of its academic and residential spaces.
The university directs that anyone—including students, staff, or external collaborators—must obtain official approval from the communication unit before filming.
“The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,” the statement said.
While the institution encourages creativity and responsible expression, it stressed that all activities must strictly adhere to university guidelines. The directive advises the public and the university community to comply strictly “in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility.”
Context: A Hub for Creators
The directive comes at a time when university campuses are frequently used as backdrops for social commentary and comedic content. Notably, UNILAG has produced some of Nigeria’s most popular skitmakers, including Muhammed Gilmore and Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie, famously known as Brain Jotter.
