ABUJA — Nigeria has opened discussions with the Swiss government on the repatriation of cultural artifacts, including monoliths and bronze pieces, as part of a broader effort to strengthen cultural diplomacy and cooperation. The talks were initiated during a recent courtesy visit by Swiss Ambassador Patrick Egloff to Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa.
The meeting, described by Ambassador Egloff as the first of its kind between a Swiss ambassador and a Nigerian minister of art and culture, was hailed as a significant step in bilateral relations. “There is a lot happening, and we would be very interested in building more institutional cooperation with the ministry,” Egloff stated. “We think this restitution would be a very good opportunity to strengthen our ties.”
Egloff revealed that the process of returning the artifacts began three years ago, with the Swiss government planning to hand over bronze pieces via the Nigerian Embassy by the end of the year.
Minister Musawa thanked the Swiss government for its proactive efforts, underscoring the vital importance of the artifacts to Nigeria’s cultural heritage. “It is very important for Nigeria to have these artifacts returned and to have a broader conversation with Switzerland about how the restitution will be carried out,” she said.
In addition to artifact restitution, the two parties also explored new avenues for collaboration. Musawa highlighted potential cooperation in key creative and cultural sectors, including animation, design, architecture, hospitality, and tourism. Both officials agreed to continue their discussions and pursue these opportunities to deepen cultural and creative ties between the two nations.
