A group of repentant armed bandits led by a known commander, Alhaji Isiya Kwashen Garwa, has released 45 hostages—comprising men, women, and children—in Katsina State, marking a significant step in ongoing peace efforts within the region.
The handover occurred on Monday, November 17, 2025, at a border community between Faskari and Bakori Local Government Areas. Local officials, including the member representing Bakori Constituency in the Katsina State House of Assembly, Engr. Abdurrahman Kandarawa, were present to receive the captives.

According to authorities, the release fulfills commitments made by the repentant bandits during a previously held reconciliation meeting aimed at reducing violence and restoring stability across affected communities.
Speaking after the handover, Kandarawa expressed gratitude to the group for adhering to the agreement and reaffirmed the local government’s determination to support initiatives geared toward long-term peace. He underscored the need for continuous dialogue between Hausa and Fulani communities, noting their shared history and the importance of rebuilding trust.
Garwa, the bandit leader who facilitated the release, appealed to federal, state, and local authorities to guarantee the safety and free movement of bandits who have renounced violence. He stressed that such assurances would encourage more fighters to surrender and commit to peace.
Officials say the released captives are undergoing preliminary screening and will soon be reunited with their families, while negotiations continue with other armed groups operating within the area.
