NIGERIA: Hunter Arrested Following Fatal Shooting of Colleague During Expedition in Ibadan

A 35-year-old hunter, Waheed Rasaki, has been taken into police custody in Oyo State following the fatal shooting of his colleague, Femi Oyedepo, during a hunting expedition in the outskirts of Ibadan.

The incident was confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, who noted that the tragedy occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, in the Oretan Ijaiye Area of Moniya, within the Akinyele Local Government Area.

Details of the Incident

According to police records, the suspect voluntarily reported the incident to the Moniya Division late Tuesday night, approximately seven hours after the shooting took place.

Rasaki informed officers that at about 2:00 PM on Tuesday, while deep within the Oretan Ijaiye Forest, he mistakenly discharged his firearm, hitting Femi Oyedepo. The impact caused the victim to slump and die instantly at the scene.

Police Response and Investigation

Following the report, a team of police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer visited the forest location.

  • Scene Visit: Detectives discovered the lifeless body of the victim at the spot described by the suspect.
  • Arrest: Waheed Rasaki was immediately arrested and remains in police custody to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
  • Accountability: The command emphasized that while the shooting is currently being treated as an accident, a thorough investigation is necessary to ensure full accountability.

“Further investigations have commenced. This case underscores the Command’s prompt response to both criminal and accidental fatalities, ensuring accountability and justice,” the PPRO stated.

The incident has sparked discussions among local residents regarding safety protocols during communal hunting activities, particularly in the forested regions of the Akinyele LGA. The suspect is expected to be processed according to legal requirements as soon as investigations are finalized.
