Nigeria: Gunmen Attack Kaduna Police Station, Kill Two Officers in Night Raid

Gunmen launched a deadly assault on the Zonkwa Police Station in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Friday night, October 17, killing at least two police officers, according to local sources.

The attack, which occurred around 8 p.m., sent residents fleeing for safety as gunfire erupted across the usually quiet community. Witnesses said the assailants stormed the station — located near Kamyim Hotel in the Kurmin-Bi area — and opened fire indiscriminately.

Eyewitnesses told The Nation that the gunmen appeared to be attempting to free suspected vandals they believed were being held at the station.

“They came shooting sporadically. It was later discovered that the suspects they came for were not even detained in Zonkwa,” a resident said on condition of anonymity. “But before that became clear, the damage had already been done.”

Sources suggested that the attackers may have mistaken Zonkwa Police Station for the facility where the suspects arrested earlier in Kachia town were being held.

A security official confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details, citing an ongoing investigation.

A short video circulating online showed two police officers lying motionless in uniform as bystanders gathered outside the damaged station. Residents described the assault as another troubling indication of worsening insecurity in parts of southern Kaduna, despite renewed peace efforts by local authorities.

Security personnel were later deployed to the area to restore calm and secure the station. As of press time, the Kaduna State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
