Nigeria: Driver Faces Court Over Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua’s Convoy

The Ogun State Police Command has formally arraigned Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in a road accident that claimed the lives of two members of heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s entourage.

According to the police, Kayode, aged 46, appeared before a Magistrate Court in Sagamu on Thursday, January 2, 2026, following the conclusion of preliminary investigations into the incident. The court has adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, for further hearing.

Police Confirmation

In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the command confirmed the arraignment and reassured the public that due legal process is being followed.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident has been charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court, and the case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings,” the statement said.

Background of the Accident

The fatal crash occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near Sagamu, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. The Lexus SUV, which was conveying Anthony Joshua and members of his support team, reportedly collided with a stationary truck parked on the roadway.

While Joshua, a former unified world heavyweight champion, sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged from hospital, two other occupants of the vehicle died as a result of the impact.

Ongoing Legal Process

Following the accident, the police detained the driver as part of routine investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash, including issues of speed, road conditions, visibility, and compliance with traffic regulations.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to Joshua’s international status and renewed concerns about road safety, poorly parked heavy-duty vehicles, and enforcement of traffic laws on major Nigerian highways.

Police authorities say investigations are ongoing and have urged motorists to observe road safety rules to prevent avoidable tragedies.
