At least 17 persons protesting against corruption and social media ban have allegedly been shot and killed by police in Nepal.
Multiple local media reports in Nepal citing law enforcement officials, says police opened fire on protesters in Kathmandu on Monday, September 8, 2025, killing at least 17 people.
A Nepali police representative is reported to have disclosed that some 145 persons were injured, with those injured including 28 police officers.
A Nepali physician, Dr. Badri Risal, was quoted by multiple media outlets as saying “Many of them are in serious condition and appear to have been shot in the head and chest.”
The demonstrators had gathered in their thousands
in Nepal’s capital to protest authorities’ decision to block most social media platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube.
According to reports, the Nepali government had claimed that the social media companies had failed to register and submit to government oversight.
The government had sent a bill for a debate in Parliament that wants to ensure that social platforms are “properly managed, responsible and accountable”, reports say.
