MTN Ghana Boosts Girls-in-ICT Initiative with GHS 17.6M Investment for Digital Empowerment

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to digital inclusion and female empowerment through sustained investment in the National Girls-in-ICT Initiative, a flagship program of the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations. The initiative has trained over 13,000 girls aged 9–15 and 1,300 teachers across 11 Ghanaian regions—North-East, Western-North, Ahafo, Bono-East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, Eastern, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta—in skills like coding, website design, game development, and animation.

Initially pledging GHS 10 million in 2021 during its 25th anniversary, MTN Ghana has increased its investment to GHS 17.6 million from 2021 to 2025, making it a key contributor to Ghana’s digital empowerment agenda. At the recent Volta Region event, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, emphasized the program’s role in preparing Ghana’s future workforce. “At MTN, we believe in inclusivity, empowering girls, the differently abled, and all who deserve a chance… The future belongs to those with digital skills. It’s not a luxury anymore, it’s a necessity,” she said. Wiafe also quoted CEO Stephen Blewett, stating, “The next big thing must come from Africa. We are here to help make that happen, by providing the skills, the tools, and the platform.”

The Volta Region event is one of three planned for 2025, with upcoming editions in Upper East and Upper West regions. The Ministry is establishing a Trust Fund to ensure the program’s sustainability and expansion. MTN Ghana’s support aligns with its vision of delivering a bold, connected digital world and its diversity and inclusion goals, reinforcing its leadership in bridging Ghana’s digital divide and empowering future female digital leaders.
