The Minnesota State Representative, Melissa Hortman and her husband have reportedly been shot dead in their home in what Governor Tim Walz has described as a “politically motivated assassination.”
Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also reportedly shot and said to be receiving treatment.
Following the assassination, a US police alert cautioned that the “suspect is armed and dangerous and may be impersonating law enforcement,” the Minnesota Star-Tribune reported.
Deputy FBI director Dan Bongino posted on X that the bureau “is working in collaboration with our local and state partners.”
“My good friend and colleague, Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were shot and killed this morning in what appears to be a politically motivated assassination,” Walz said at a press conference.
At 10:33 a.m., Walz said Hoffman and his wife “are out of surgery” and receiving care, and that “we are cautiously optimistic that they will survive this assassination attempt.”
President Donald Trump issued a statement on the shootings, saying he had “been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota,” and “such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America.”
Person of Interest
CBS News has cited its law enforcement source as saying that a person of interest has been identified and being sought by investigators in connection with the shootings as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter of Minnesota.
According to CBS News, investigators have said they believe the suspect was dressed in a manner to appear like a police officer when Hortman and her husband, Mark were killed in their Brooklyn Park home, while Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot about 5 miles away in their Champlin home.
