Media personality and actress Ariyike Owolagba, popularly known as Ariyiike Dimples, has opened up about a difficult church experience that led her to quit attending services for three years.
Speaking during an episode of the Open Up podcast, Ariyiike revealed that she was severely judged by her choice of dressing by an elder in the church. This experience made her feel unwelcomed and judged by the community.
The Judgment Over a Pencil Skirt
Ariyiike explained that her local church community consisted mostly of elderly people, leading to a clash of doctrines with the younger generation.
“The reason I stopped going to church was because I wore a pencil skirt to church and an elderly woman said I will go to hell fire. I was shocked and felt wrongly judged so I stopped going to church for 3 years. And thankfully, I was already out of my parents’ house,” she said.
The judgment did not stop there, as the elderly woman took the issue a step further by reporting her outfit to her father.
“The woman reported me to my dad. I had to take picture of the skirt and send to my mum to prove that I wasn’t dressing indecently. But my dad believed in the ideology of a community raising a child. So, I chose to avoid the community church so that they won’t see me,” she recalled.
The actress, however, stated that her decision to quit attending church did not affect her underlying faith in God. Her candidness highlights the pressure and scrutiny faced by young people in religious communities over issues of fashion and outward expression.
