Man Gored to Death at Spanish Festival

A man has died after being gored by a bull at an annual Spanish festival, in a horrifying incident captured on video. The victim, who was desperately trying to escape by climbing onto railings, was killed just after 6:30 p.m. yesterday evening in Ubrique, a picturesque tourist town in Spain’s south-west province of Cadiz.

Footage of the event shows the man, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, attempting to hoist himself to safety by grabbing onto metal railings over a ground-floor apartment window. As the bull charged, it knocked his shoe off and dumped him on the ground before goring him several times. He was critically injured and died shortly after being rushed to a nearby health center.

The incident occurred during the 10th edition of an event called the Toro del Gayumbo. The second of two bulls released that day, named Mosquetero (Musketeer), was responsible for the attack on the 57-year-old local, who has not been officially named. His death was confirmed just after 8 p.m. last night.

In the aftermath, town hall officials declared a day of mourning to coincide with the day of their patron saint. They announced that tonight’s fireworks display has been cancelled and that flags on public buildings will fly at half-mast as a sign of respect.

In a statement, officials offered their “sincere condolences and solidarity to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased,” and asked for “understanding, calm and cooperation from all residents and visitors.”

A local resident, Isabel Carrasco Romero, reacted to the news on social media, saying, “My deepest condolences to the family of our deceased neighbour. This would have been a preventable death if our council did not promote these kinds of backward events under the guise of tradition.”
