Mahama Leads Ghana’s Delegation 80th UNGA

The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, is leading Ghana’s delegation to the 80th edition of the annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.

The 2025 UNGA, being held under the global theme: “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights”, is scheduled to take place from 22nd to 30th September.

While at the UNGA, the Ghanaian leader is expected to make a case for Africa’s sovereignty and reparatory justice.

It would be recalled that while speaking at the Ghanaian Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, September 15, 2025, Ghan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said in line with long-standing UN tradition, President Mahama will deliver Ghana’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday, 25th September, where he will appear as the 12th speaker of the day. His address will mark a historic moment, as he becomes the first Ghanaian President to return to address the UN General Assembly after an eight-year interval.

Ablakwa said Mahama’s visit will include participation in several high-level meetings and strategic side events that reflect Ghana’s leadership on key African and global issues.

On 24th September, President Mahama, in his capacity as African Union (AU) Champion for African Financial Institutions, will host a major side event on Africa’s Financial Sovereignty. The event aims to bring together Heads of State and Government, Finance Ministers, and representatives of the African Union and other institutions.

The discussions will focus on asserting Africa’s financial independence, advancing the establishment of AU Financial Institutions, and pushing for reforms in the global financial system.

Additionally, on 25th September, Ghana will co-host a high-level side event with Senegal to advance the African Union’s campaign for Reparatory Justice for Africans and people of African descent. This reflects Ghana’s ongoing leadership in advocating for reparative justice and reform of historical injustices on the global stage.

President Mahama is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders to discuss mutual interests in areas such as development cooperation, peace, climate change, and economic partnerships.

The delegation’s participation in the 80th UNGA underscores Ghana’s continued commitment to global peace, multilateral cooperation, and the advancement of Africa’s development agenda.
