Joe Caroff, the graphic designer widely known for creating the iconic 007 gun logo for the James Bond franchise and other famous movie posters, has died at the age of 103. His sons, Michael and Peter, confirmed to The New York Times that he passed away in hospice care at his Manhattan home on Sunday, just one day before his 104th birthday.
Caroff was tasked in 1962 with creating a letterhead for a publicity release for Dr. No, the very first James Bond film. His work also included posters for a number of classic films, including West Side Story, A Hard Day’s Night, Last Tango in Paris, Manhattan, and Cabaret. Despite his highly recognizable work, his name remained largely unknown for many years.
