A French labour court has delivered a massive legal blow to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), ruling that the club must pay former star forward Kylian Mbappé a total of €60 million (£50m / $63m) in unpaid wages and bonuses. The judgment follows a heated dispute that began after Mbappé left the club for Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2024.
PSG’s €440 Million Counter-Claim Dismissed
To make matters worse for the Ligue 1 champions, the court entirely dismissed their eye-watering €440 million counter-claim for damages and “loss of opportunity.” PSG’s argument that there was a verbal “gentleman’s agreement” with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to waive his salary if he didn’t extend his contract collapsed due to the lack of written proof.
Mbappé’s legal team celebrated the decision, emphasizing that the outcome was just compensation for work already performed.
“For 18 months, Kylian Mbappé has been asking for one simple thing: to be paid the wages and bonuses for the work he performed,” his lawyers said.
Details of the Unpaid Funds
The payment of €60 million covers Mbappé’s unpaid salaries for the months of April, May, and June 2024, along with an ethics bonus and a signing bonus that the club had withheld.
Crucially, the court ordered immediate payment, meaning the club must disburse the funds now, irrespective of any potential appeal.
PSG has confirmed plans to appeal the ruling but has also been ordered to publish an acknowledgment on their official website, with a formal statement expected soon. The court ruling makes it clear that labor law applies to footballers, even in the most high-profile and dramatic of transfer sagas.
