Kenyan President, William Ruto, has in a presidential proclamation, confirmed the death of late Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, announcing that Odinga will be given a state burial.
Also, he announced that “in testimony of the highest esteem in which all Kenyans hold the person and the memory of Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, the nation will observe a period of national mourning from today until sunset of the day of his interment.”
According to President Ruto, the flag of Kenya shall be flown at half-mast at State House and all Kenyan diplomatic missions, public buildings and public grounds, all military bases, posts, and stations on all naval vessels of Kenya until sunset on the day of his interment.
Raila Odinga died from heart failure in India around 9am on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
In a separate statement on his official Facebook page, Ruto described Odinga as a “peacemaker who always put country first”, saying “his optimism, strength, and humility epitomised the Kenyan spirit.”
He further described Odina as “the most significant leader” of Kenya’s “democratic experiment”, saying “He carried himself with coverage and grace and his voice, sometimes fiery, sometimes soft, always echoed with purpose.”
According to him, “Hon Odinga is no longer with us, but he has left us stronger and better.”
