Austria has won its third Eurovision Song Contest title with JJ’s stunning performance of “Wasted Love,” a song that showcased his exceptional vocal range and emotional depth. The dramatic staging, which evoked a shipwreck, captivated the audience in Basel, Switzerland, and cemented Austria’s win.
JJ is a classically trained Austrian-Filipino singer. He expressed his gratitude for the huge win, saying, “I feel very, very humbled and honored that the artwork that I’m putting out there is being so well accepted.”
‘Wasted Love’ is a reflection of JJ’s personal experience with unreciprocated love, and he hopes to continue making music that resonates with audiences.
The grand final featured a diverse range of performances, including a Latvian ethno-pop six-piece and an Albanian double act. Israel’s Yuval Raphael took second place with her powerful performance of “New Day Will Rise,” while Estonia secured third place.
JJ’s win marks a triumphant return to the top for Austria, which last won the contest in 2014 with Conchita Wurst. As a defining event on the LGBTQ+ calendar, Eurovision continues to showcase some of Europe’s most talented and eclectic performers.
