Iran has carried out retaliatory airstrikes against Israel, just one day after Israel attacked nuclear sites in Iran and killed Iranian nuclear scientists, top military commanders and civilians.
The retaliatory attacks were launched into Tel Aviv as well as Jerusalem.
Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) confirmed the “wave of hypersonic missile strikes” on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, saying Israel’s attack on Iran was “unprovoked.”
According to IRNA, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, appointed new military officials the same day Israel launched its attack.
The Supreme Leader, in a report by Al Jazeera, says Israel “will not remain unscathed”, noting that Iran “will not go for half-measures” in a retaliatory attack.
The Middle East Eye and AFP says Iran called Israel’s attack a “declaration of war” and a report by CNN says the Supreme Leader has vowed to “inflict heavy blows” in retaliation for Israel’s overnight attacks.
Casualties
Reports say at least 40 persons are being treated in Israeli hospitals following the retaliatory strike. Two persons, according to CNN, are in critical conditions.
