Veteran actor and politician Hema Malini continues to impress fans with her remarkable physical and mental fitness, even at the age of 77. Her routine incorporates yoga, dancing, meditation, a balanced diet, and regular religious fasting.
In a 2008 interview with The Telegraph, Hema Malini detailed the specific daily routines and dietary habits that contribute to her overall wellness.

Daily Routine and Fasting
The actor starts her day simply but thoughtfully.
“The first thing I have in the morning is a cup of tea. I have only two cups of tea a day. The milk for my tea is boiled beforehand with kesar (saffron). Along with my tea, I have crisp Marie biscuits. Later, I have idlis for breakfast. I avoid fried stuff like vadas.”
A key element of her routine is religious fasting, which she observes twice a week:
“I fast on Mondays for Lord Shiva and on Fridays for the divine mother, Durga or Lakshmi. When I am fasting, I have two small pieces of unsalted paneer, bananas and a glass of orange juice.”
She keeps her fasts relatively short, breaking them by 6:30 PM. For her children’s education, she also follows a disciplined schedule.
Diet and Food Philosophy
Hema Malini follows a strict pure vegetarian diet, a practice rooted in her orthodox Iyengar family background. She emphasizes consuming seasonal fruits, vegetables, and whole foods.
“My diet is pure vegetarian. I hail from an orthodox Iyenger family; so we don’t eat non-vegetarian food,” she said.
When traveling or shooting, she ensures she maintains her routine:
“When I am shooting, I carry my own lunch from home… When I am fasting, I have a bowl of fruit salad and some boiled vegetables without salt.”
She also revealed a specific habit related to her main meals: “I am particular about not eating chapattis, when I eat rice and vice-versa.” She added that she particularly enjoys South Indian and Gujarati cuisine, especially kadis and rasam.
